I was trying to find information on who was buried in the Rambo Cemetery in Wood County, but there was no information. I went to Ancestry.com to see what Rambos lived in Wood County,TX, and there I found Captain John H. Rambo, Co.H,22nd Texas Infantry(Hubbard's). Wood County records list him as buried in the Myrtle Springs Cemetery in Wood County,TX,but John H. Rambo and his wife are buried in a private cemetery which might be the Rambo Cemetery. John H. Rambo was born in 1829 in Georgia, probably Floyd County, and died in 1900 in Wood County,TX. In 1874 there was an insanity hearing for John H. Rambo. The judge was James Stephen Hogg who would later become the 20th Governor of Texas. James S. Hogg had only one daughter named Ima,but Texas lore added another daughter, Ura Hogg. I grew up thinking James S. Hogg had two daughters,Ima and Ura Hogg.

This grave is located just outside the fence of my cousins property right north north west of Quitman Texas off of county road 1326

There are actually two graves there, one of John H Rambo (Civil War) and his wife Mary Rambo - Maiden Name Mary Price. The last time I saw the graves were when I was around 15 or 16 years old.

Lore has it that there was mason jars full of confederate money that John had looted throughout the war that were thrown into a spring fed pond located near his grave.

The two graves are on private land and you must ask permission to view or document the graves however I am certain that if you track down the owner of this piece of land it can be accomplished.

that should pinpoint the location and I have updated google to show that there is a Private Cemetery there with the name Rambo Cemetary.

Beautiful!! Although I cringe at seeing her narrow waist! Fashion is a strange thing, that wasp-like waist does not even look good on this beautifully full figured girl...

Thanks for sharing all this!

When I travelled to the US for the second time, in 1988, whenever we reached our motel and turned the TV on, we saw and heard the trailer for the movie. These line accompanied us all the time then...
"Who is this John Rambo?"
"Your worst nightmare!"

eclark,
Thanks for that information on John H. Rambo! I was fascinated by John H. Rambo's insanity hearing. I also live in the area,so I might check out the grave. I am also interested in the name "Rambo". I have a Samuel D. Stephenson who lived in Limestone County,Alabama. Samuel served with the 9th Alabama Infantry. His sister Mary Jane Stephenson married a William Rambo in Limestone County,Alabama in 1860. William Rambo had a brother Thomas M. Rambo who served in the same company of the 9th Alabama Infantry as did Samuel David Stephenson. Thomas M. Rambo was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 and imprisoned at Point Lookout,Maryland, where he died. I like the local lore about the Confederate money.

Thanks for the picture Ima. Her father James Stephen Hogg was the Justice of the Peace at the insanity hearing of John H. Rambo. Hard to believe he rose from a Justice of the Peace to become Governor of Texas. Ima came close to losing her father when James Stephen Hogg, while working for the sheriff of Quitman,Texas, was lured across the Wood County line by a group of outlaws who shot him in the back.

Well, I hope she is wearing a corset. Odd the Guinness still has a World's Smallest Waist record to publish.

Thanks for the info. Future Union general Dan Sickles was the first to use the temporarily insane defense in the US.

Wasn't the movie Rambo, John J?
IIRC the first movie was titled Rambo. It was until the second movie was released when the title of the first movie changed to First Blood. (That's if I recall correctly!) The name of the first novel is First Blood.

My ggg grandfather, Henry Stout, was a 2nd Lt. in the "Wood County Rebels". He must have known Rambo. I met Ms. Hogg in 1967. The State of Texas dedicated a small picnic park and historical marker for Henry Stout in Wood Co., south of Winnsboro. He had also been a captain in the Texas Rangers, the 1st sheriff of Wood Co., and a State Representative. Ms. Hogg was there for the ceremony. I was teenager but remember her as a very thin fragile woman of about 90 years.

Wow! That's really amazing!

eclark,
Thanks for the information on the Rambo Cemetery near Quitman,TX. Captain John H. Rambo was born in 1829 and died in 1900. His full name was John Humphrey Rambo. His grandmother was a Humphrey. At his insanity hearing the name Kinchin Rambo was mentioned. It appears that John Humphrey Rambo's father was named Kinchin Rambo. John H. Rambo came from Floyd County,Georgia according to the hearing. In 2010,the graves of the Rambo Cemetery in Floyd County,Georgia had to be moved to make way for a highway. This cemetery was thought to be that of the Rev. Kinchin Rambo born 1802. I came across this information today
