An Invitation to Participate

Historical Matrimonial Ceremony
Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park
6614 Danville Road, Nicholasville, Kentucky 40356
September 10-11, 2016

In the aftermath of the Civil War, the Freedmen’s Bureau conducted marriage ceremonies for couples who were denied this sacred privileged during the antebellum era. Many USCT soldiers officially sealed long-standing common-law relationships through these official marriages. Many also began new relationships through these legal marriages. Camp Nelson will re‑create this historical milestone on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at 2 p.m.

Couples are invited to submit an application to participate in this historical matrimonial ceremony re-creation. Couples must wear mid-19th century attire (military or civilian) and be committed to interpreting the historical significance of these marriages.
This is a juried invitation. Applications will be reviewed by a committee.

Couples must submit a photograph of themselves in their mid-century 19th century attire and accessories. A workshop will be available on June 11, 2016, at Camp Nelson to assist pending applicants in either making or purchasing accurate clothing.

Please contact the following for an application:

Application must be submitted by August 1, 2016.

This ceremony is one component of activities scheduled for the weekend of September 10-11, 2016. The weekend will also include the 150th Anniversary of the discharge of USCT soldiers and conclusion ceremonies honoring the Bureau of Colored Troops. A re-enlistment ceremony is also planned.
