A friend happened to see a restored photo on this site and asked how I fixed it. I decided to show how on CWT with a different photo and will send him a link. I completed this photo of General Henry W. Benham some time ago but went back to the Library of Congress for the original.
A big piece of the glass is missing; lots of lines on background, hands and sword; other spots easily visible on clothes. Cropping this photo now would eliminate some work but that would remove part of the chair on the right side.
Start cloning the background. I have no software to replace the entire background but prefer cloning as a more original look is kept.
Finished cloning and retouching most of the background.
Cropped photo and done some more retouching on face, clothes and hands. Just a little more retouching and cloning is all that is needed!
Finally finished! iPhoto for retouching and cropping. Seashore for cloning.
