Background Detail in Sharpshooter Photograph

Greg, I have always respected Mr. Groves's study and I am fully convinced that he is correct. Although he will never convince the academics. Groves makes much more sense than the opposite theory. Unfortunately, Gardner never numbered the plates for this subject so the argument will go on. Thank you for your post.

There are two intriguing theories about this. One, from LBG Tony Nicastro, with a background in mortuary science, that this fellow was rendered unconscious by a wound or, for lack of visible trauma, a concussion, and may not have actually died until much later or, worse, is still clinically alive in these photos.

The other theory is that this is a casualty of the 15th Georgia, which was chased out of the Rose Woods by McCandless' Brigade, back toward the base of the Triangular Field, and across the Slyder Farm late in the afternoon of July 3rd—after Pickett's Charge. Thus, his death came a full 24+ hours after those of the decidedly July 2 casualties.
