Back mark of Stiles' Vermont Gallery of Art in Burlington, Vermont. Period inscription inked on verso: "Arthur P. Lyon Sergt. 'A' Co. 15th Penn. Cav. Killed Jany 16th 1865 near Red Hill Ala. By the Rebel Genl. Hylan Lyon after his surrender to the Sergt." Arthur Lyon and a detachment of the 15th Penn. surrounded a house in which Confederate General Hylan B. Lyon [we assume no relation!] was sleeping. The soldiers demanded his surrender. In acquiescing, the general requested the courtesy that he be allowed to put on his clothes. After the request was granted, the general grabbed a revolver from under his pillow, shot Arthur in the head, killing him instantly, and escaped.

Needless to say, if I were in the 15th PA Cav and we got our hands on General Lyon, he wouldn't have been breathing much longer...
