There is an interesting and frustrating thread on the historiography of slavery. You can find it here.

One figure who keeps coming up is historian Ulrich B. Phillips, the author of several books and many essays on the subject of slavery. I have to admit that I never read his work before. I thought it might be good for me to read him and offers some commentary and notes as I go along. If others want to read with me and offer their own thoughts, that would be great. The two books by Phillips that keep coming up are American Negro Slavery and Life and Labor in the Old South. Only American Negro Slavery is availble for free online, so that is the one I am reading.
