Can someone decipher what the other letters after "8th NY" in the sign mean? Looks like "St," meaning probably state, then a "V," meaning maybe volunteer, then an "H."

Chubachus… the 8th NY was apparently a Milita unit from what I've read so I think there's 2 possible clues.
1. The last letter may be a M which would signify Militia but it sure looks a lot more like the letter H which MAY be
2. The company of the 8th which in this case would be Company H.
Those are the only 2 options that I can think of that might answer your good question. I'm sure someone more familiar with NY units will be able to answer your question with more confidence then I have about my 2 possibilities.
