Beyond shocked, no extravagant gesture was too much in the days following Lincoln's murder by an attention seeking narcissist too dainty for the battlefield- not too dainty to shoot a man from behind. We said Goodbye, and Goodbye again across the country- in headlines and ceremonies, on our homes and business, on our clothing and jewelry. We are still saying Goodbye- and also Thank You 150 years later, what does anyone think a Lincoln penny is all about?

April 15th, 1865. Maybe it is no accident it is also tax day- may as well glue together all the misery possible .

'Old Bob ' had been pulling a milk cart when someone remembered he was Lincoln's favorite horse. Must have been pretty happy to be rescued. This is also the best photo of their old home in Springfield, Ill, soaked in mourning. Wish we knew who the people are.

What was interesting, was Mary and Abraham's home became a veritable shrine- but Mary did not.

And the crowds grew

None of these were 'official ', you could just have them made- or a store would make hundreds- which would sell out in hours.

Feel free to add. Anything and everything became a mourning object. It was as if the nation did not know what to do with all the ' Sad ', it came out of our country's pores.
