Approx. 5000 square feet.

Edit - On further review, I'm giving credit for an answer of 4,964 square feet (See LZRD WZRD's post below), so 5,000 square feet is close enough.

I found a source that says the original dimensions were 50 feet by 400 feet, so that's 20,000 square feet.

Another source says the painting currently covers 15,030 square feet.

So 4,970 square feet would need to be restored to return it to its original dimensions.

The History Center intends to restore the painting to its full size and to re-create the 128-year-old painting’s original visual perspective – both of which have been lost for nearly 100 years. The History Center will be able to restore a vertical strip of missing painting that is 6 feet wide and 50 feet high – thus returning 300 square vertical feet to the painting.

The History Center will also restore the original overall height of the painting, restoring the previous sky by returning 8 feet to the top of the painting running the full 371 feet around the entire circumference of the painting – thus returning 2,968 square horizontal feet to the painting. In total, the Atlanta History Center will restore 3,268 square feet of the painting that has been missing since these parts of the Cyclorama were cut off and removed in 1921 to fit into the current building in Grant Park.

The original Cyclorama was 42 feet high and 358 feet long for a total of 18,036 square feet - if the whole thing were to be redone.

Edit - They don't have to redo the whole thing.

Edit - Upon further review, I'm going to count this answer as correct. I found a website that says the original painting was 50 x 400, or 20,000 square feet, and it currently measures 42 x 358, or 15,036 square feet. 20,000 - 15,036 = 4,964, so your response is correct.

Oh, God, why math? According to the access Atlanta link on an other thread on the forum, 3,268 square feet need to be restored to get it back to its original size and please don't ask me what my original answer was.

3268.. In total, we would restore 3,268 square feet of the painting that has been missing since these parts of the Cyclorama were cut off and removed in 1921 to fit into the current building in Grant Park.

Three-hundred square feet, recreating a six foot long section of the fifty foot tall cyclorama that was removed to fit the painting in its Grant Park location.

Edit - There are actually two sections that need to be restored. In addition to the 50 x 6 section, they need to restore 8 feet all along the top.
