After the war 1st Lt. Joseph Sinclair Ragsdale, of Company F, 54th North Carolina, proposed marriage to Emily Jane Idol with a letter. Here is a portion of it:

"I have marched the winter's snow about frozen to death and in the summer heat nearly dying of thirst. My clothes have been pierced by the balls of the enemy. My sword case has been shot in two at my side. I have faced death on fifty battlefields. I have lain wounded amid the thunder of artillery and the fellow mortals dying at my side, thinking that my life's blood was fast flowing out. In all these things my heart was unconquered. But now that heart gives up itself and asks only to be the captive of you its captor. I now come to you and ask your hand in marriage."
