For the 50th anniversary of the battle Thomas Ince released his epic movie The Battle of Gettysburg. Originally planed as a two reel movie the final movie was the unheard of, for 1913, 5 reels (20 minutes). The movie open in New York on June 1 1913. By 1913 standards this was truly an epic film. Most silent movies were of but one reel and this move was two reals of actors and three reels of battle footage with up to 2,500 soldiers being used.
Sadly no copies of the movie have survived and all that remains is some stills and some advertising posters. How great it would be if a copy could be found so we could watch it. Here is a still from the movie. I do wonder what the serving battle participants thought when the watched the movie?
