After a lot of searching: .36 caliber Whitney pistol.

https://books.google.com/books?id=g...=jeb stuart's revolvers yellow tavern&f=false The book is In the Footsteps of J.E.B. Stuart, by Clint Johnson.
"It is here [Virginia Historical Society, later the Museum of the Confederacy as of 2009] that you'll find the last artifacts associated with J. E. B. Stuart, including. . . the .36 caliber Whitney pistol he was carrying the day he was shot."
The Whitney is also mentioned here, although not in connection with Yellow Tavern: http://www.arms-books.com/belgium/ned/detail.asp?id=1955
Photo of the Whitney here: http://civilwartalk.com/threads/j-e-b-stuart-artifacts.15883/page-2 Photos were taken at the Museum of the Confederacy in 2009.

Stuart also owned a Tranter revolver given him by Heros von Borke, but it's in such good condition that it seems doubtful that he ever carried it. It's in the Smithsonian. http://www.firearmsmuseum.org.au/TranterHistory/Users/von_borcke.htm http://www.firearmsmuseum.org.au/TranterHistory/Users/von_borcke.htm

Most people know that Jeb Stuart used a LeMat revolver. But what other revolver was he carrying when he was killed at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, May 11, 1864?

Colt

Edit - Although there is a site indicating that the Colt was the preferred weapon of the Confederacy, I can find no source stating that Stuart carried a Colt at Yellow Tavern.

Not part of the answer, but the Museum of the Confederacy is now the American Civil War Museum and presumably JEB's stuff is still there.

Starr.

Edit - The Starr revolver was used in the western theater, while Stuart, as far as I know, saw action only in the East.

I can find no source indicating that Stuart carried a Starr at Yellow Tavern.

In addition to his LeMat, he likely had his .36 caliber Whitney Navy #3110.

This author speculates that the Whitney may have actually been the firearm he used to fire at the Union troops charging through his lines, and not his LeMat.

The Whitney Navy #3110, which was owned by Confederate cavalry general J.E.B. Stuart, is now in the collection of the Virginia Historical Society.

This article states that the Whitney was carried by JEB Stuart at Yellow Tavern but offers no further info:

The .36 caliber Whitney revolver Stuart carried at Yellow Tavern and fired until empty in the seconds before he was mortally wounded. Often depicted as carrying the LeMat revolver now in the collection of the Museum of the Confederacy, Stuart found the Whitney, which is said to have been designed based on the best qualities of Colt and Remington revolvers, to be lighter and less cumbersome. Its use by Stuart at Yellow Tavern was confirmed by the Stuart family when the revolver was donated to the Virginia Historical Society (Battle Abbey) where it is now on display. - Courtesy of the Virginia Historical Society.

We had a similar question a few months ago, and the answer was that Stuart carried a Lefaucheux revolver, so my best guess is that Lefaucheux is the answer that this question is looking for.

Answer: A Whitney revolver, serial # 3110. Source of information: The Whitney Navy Revolver, by Daniel Williams, page 63.

Edit - The sources provided by the players in response to this question strongly support that Stuart was carrying a Whitney revolver, and nothing else, at Yellow Tavern.

However, the answer to the May 7 question here in the trivia game indicated that Stuart carried either a LeMat or a Lefaucheux. There was no indication that he ever carried anything else. Interestingly, nobody mentioned a Whitney in the responses to that question.

I'm not going to mark anybody wrong if they find something here on CivilWarTalk that appears to support their answer. Although evidence has been presented that Stuart was not carrying either a LeMat or a Lefaucheux at Yellow Tavern, I am going to give credit for Lefaucheux as a correct response.
