1. Relative of Dandridge McRae.

2. No idea. I spent WAY too much time trying to figure out this one.

Aside from the obvious connection via his role in the movie "Free State of Jones"........
Matthew McConaughey's 2x great grandfather was James W McConaughey (1821-1872). He married Albina McRae. Albina's brother was Confederate Adjutant General Dandridge McRae. In 1863, James W McConaughey was appointed Assistant Adjutant General (under McRae) with the rank of Captain. To summarize....his 2x great grandfather was Assistant Adjt Genl James W McConaughey and his 2x great uncle was AdjutGenl Dandridge McRae.

Bonus:
George Stoneman served as Adjutant to Joseph Eggleston Johnston in the 1st Dragoons Oct 22, 1854 - Mar 3, 1855. (Both would become generals and met on opposing sides in 1864.)

Edit - I couldn't find anything in the source you cited to confirm that Stoneman served as adjutant to Johnston, but even if he did, you still would have had to name a battle at which they met in order to get credit for a correct answer.

Con. Brig General Dandridge McRae.
McConaughey also appears in Lincoln car commercials
"All right, All right, All right!"

Bonus:
George Thomas with Braxton Bragg. Later met in Chicamagua.

Edit - I can't find anything in this source stating that Thomas was Bragg's adjutant, or vice versa, in 1855. I note also that the Battle of Chickamauga took place in 1863.

As for the bonus I´m not sure. The only people having an adjutant usually were generals or department heads. And of both there were pretty few to were still serving in the field in 1864 ... or about none and only who became so after 55 (Joe Johnston) as far as I can think of right now. So as I´m not sure about this I make a little jump and include regimental adjutants as well ... which leads us to Kenner Garrard. The adjutant of the 2nd Cavalry, he served with both Robert E. Lee and William J. Hardee. He clashed with Lee until 1863 when he transferred to D.C. and then to the west. There he´d clash with Hardee numerous times in 1864, especially during the Atlanta Campaign.

Edit - I can't find anything to confirm that Garrard was adjutant to Hardee. Even if he was, you would have needed to name a battle, rather than a campaign, at which the two met.

He is a related to Con. Brig. Gen. Dandridge McRae.

bonus: Lt. John Bell Hood (as adjutant) to this Major George Henry Thomas - Battle of Nashville.
Source: John Bell Hood: Extracting Truth From History by Thomas J. Brown page 22.

Edit - For the main question, I am also accepting the answer that McConaughey portrayed Newton Knight in the movie "The Free State of Jones." Since the official answer merely states that McConaughey is related to Gen. McRae, I won't worry about whether anybody got the correct number of "greats" in the familial relationship.

For the bonus question, I am also accepting the battles of Spring Hill and Franklin as correct answers. Even though Thomas was not on the field at those battles, John Schofield was under his command.
