between may and october of 1864, sometime prior to the battle of 3rd winchester
Like all north Carolina units serving in the ANV, the 14th Regiment was well supplied with uniforms throughout its service. Records show extensive issues of clothing in July 1861, January 1862, August 1862, December 1862, May/June 1863, September 1863, December 1863 and March 1864. Records after this are incomplete. However there is a series of photographs taken at the Alsop Farm in May 1864 by Timothy O'Sullivan which depict the dead of Ramseur's NC Brigade (2th ,4th ,14th ,30th regiments). The photos show the men's uniforms in great detail, allowing us an insight into the typical attire of a NC soldier at this late stage of the war. Of the 7 jackets which are discernible, 5 are Richmond Depot 3 types in imported English blue/gray kersey, two of which have Federal Eagle buttons. Two men are wearing jean cloth NC jackets. All the trousers are various shades of jean cloth. All are well shod. Only one hat is visible and that is a dark slouch with a military cord around the crown. One of the dead has an inverted US belt plate. Hope this helps.
