At the start of the Civil War Sam Houston was Governor of Texas and had previously been a US Senator from Texas, President of Texas (twice) as well as Governor of Tennessee (only person to be Governor of two states).

He was the only Confederate Governor to oppose secession and refused to take an oath of Allegiance to the Confederacy. Instead he resigned in March of 1861 and died in Huntsville Texas in 1863.

This image is a demonstration in restoration as much as it is colorization. I had this image request from a client for a book series earlier this week. It took a considerable amount of work to repair the damage and I hope that you are as pleased with the results as I am. I know that @Zuzah would be dead now (according to his recent post on the subject) if he had attempted this, but I wanted him to know that it does not kill you and I think the effort is worth the difference! :sneaky:

Thank you all so much!

@Nathanb1 Which museum are you referring too?

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville, Texas, on the campus of...of course, Sam Houston State University. In fact, they have a lot of his personal effects so if you were colorizing photos of him, you might be able to see the real thing. He was a very colorful dresser!

The things you learn on this forum! Thanks so much. I will see about reaching out to them.

Nicely done. Just recently finished watching Texas Rising. Whilst not incredibly accurate, it was entertaining. I've always been a fan of Houston. If only he'd lived a few more years to see the Union win the war and show his fellow Texans the error of their ways

We Weill now have to kidnap you and wipe your brain of the caca you absorbed.
"Not terribly accurate" is like saying Dachau was a summer camp.

"Not terribly accurate" is like saying Dachau was a summer camp.

When I was growing up we lived in Germany for several years (US Air Force) and visited Dachau a few times. Definitely no summer camp.

On a different perspective. My father-in-law was one of those that was placed in the Japanese interment camps during WWII. When my wife was growing up she had no idea of her family history. When she was in middle school and they covered this portion of history the teacher asked her if her family had been impacted by this. When she asked her parents about it they confirmed that her father was in one of these camps during the war. "Don't you remember family members always talking about their time in camp?" "I thought they had gone to a really long summer camp!"
