Gettysburg Civil War Show

Did anyone find any "Treasures" at the recent Gettysburg Civil War Show? I wasn't able to attend and am hoping that perhaps some of my "Cyber-friends" were there and were blessed with copious amounts of good fortune!

Unfortunately the show is really diminished from the past, many of the tried and true dealers no longer show and the pickings are slim. Many of the mainstream ACW dealers now carry WWI and II to survive. ACW collectors are getting up there in age, as are the dealers and the poor economy coupled, with a younger collecting group, that is more interested in WWI & II, due to cost and contemporary accounts, movies and documentaries, has impacted the hobby.

This is good and bad, good in that prices are coming down precipitously, but bad for those selling.

Thank you for the report. I have also observed the same trends in collecting.

I belong to a small loosely knit group of old-time collectors who meet rather randomly. We are throw-backs to the days of "competitive collecting" where we would avidly look forward to each meeting to show off our latest acquisitions. Everyone also included a dissertation on the history of their arm, which made the gatherings informative and educational, too. Each individual would make every attempt to convince the group that his example was the best one of the day! The meetings were replete with fine whiskey, good cigars, and would last long into the night. Today, whenever those few of us who are left happen to meet, we reminisce how great "The Good ol' Days" were for collecting, swap stories and tall tales, remember those who have passed on with stories about them, and lament how we are "never going to get our money out" of what we have! We then close with a moderate lunch with nothing stronger than coffee, and are home long before dark!

Jobe, after attending many CW shows through the years... this has been my experience as well. There are fewer dealers, that are getting older, and smaller numbers of browsers/buyers at the shows. The younger generation has more interest in collecting WWI and WWII or even Viet Nam War items. With the exception of very high priced items, many with provenance, I would doubt that the earlier prices that many CW artifacts commanded... will ever come back.
And I live in the east where much of the Civil War occurred....

I cannot believe I had never heard of this could someone please get back to me and tell me where and when and thank you I cannot believe I have never heard of this before once again thank you.

The Gettysburg show was last weekend 24-26 June 2016.

Thirty years ago you had the Gettysburg Civil War Militaria Show and the Gettysburg Civil War Book Show. They were held on the same weekend in different locations, and usually held on the weekend closest to the Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Back then many of the leading Civil War collectors and dealers throughout the United States attended. Names like R.E. Neville, Bill Turner, Doc Murphy, Jim Stamatelos and many others. Sadly, all of these gentlemen have passed away.

Things have changed over the years and today's Gettysburg show isn't anything like the Gettysburg show of the past.

It is truly sad that this wonderful and important era is slowly dying out! I can't get enough of the ACW and all that's attached to it. I will be there in late October.
