Ha! Finally a question I know the answer to without researching and was actually considering submitting as a question myself!

"Ollie" Hardy, of comic acting note (Laurel and Hardy,) was the son of Oliver Hardy (b 5 Dec 1841) who enlisted as a Private in Co K 16th Georgia Infantry on July 25, 1861 in Columbia County, GA for "the war." The elder Hardy was promoted to Sergeant and received a gunshot wound in the "gluteus maximus buttox" at the battle of Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862. He was furloughed for recovery and later served as a Sub Enrolling officer in Columbia County, GA.

Norvell Hardy (aka Ollie) was born Jan 18, 1892 and was the only child of Hardy's third marriage (to Emily Norvell Tant). When Norvell (aka Ollie) was 18 years old, he assumed the first name "Oliver" in honor of his late father, who had died Nov 22, 1892, soon after his birth.

His father was Oliver Hardy. Oliver enlisted in Company K of the 16th Georgia infantry. He was involved in 16 battles, including Antietam. Oliver enlisted as a private and was promoted all the way to sergeant.

Sgt Oliver Hardy was a Civil War veteran and father of the legendary comedian Oliver Norvell Hardy. He was the son of a farmer who owned thirteen acres of land and nine slaves, and descended from English stock. When the Civil War began in 1861, young Oliver was one of the local farmers in Columbia County who rallied to defend their way of life. He enlisted in Company K, 16th Georgia Infantry, rising from Private to Sergeant, and eventually fighting in sixteen battles during the course of the war. He was wounded during the Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. At the end of the war, he was among less than half of the original Columbia County soldiers who returned home.
