Located above the Devil's Den, Confederate sharpshooters have been sighted on the rocks down at the bottom of the field, at the end of the woods, prepared to shoot. They have also been heard resounding their famous "rebel yells" and have been known to actually cause "impressions" in the grass, coming towards visitors in the field. Union cannon can be heard as well as screaming and moaning of wounded/dying soldiers all throughout the field. Union soldiers have been sighted at the left of the gate-entrance of the field and have been known to approach visitors. Incidentally, many visitors have experienced their photographic equipment does NOT function in the Triangular Field ~ no matter how new or state-of-the-art their equipment may be! Distant drums have been reportedly heard by many, many visitors here.

I've heard the same things about photographic and recording equipment and was GREATLY disappointed when my video taken in the field turned out just fine!

Yes I have heard about the Triangular Field as well. They say it's quite and active area and some swear they have taken pictures there that just never turned out or had a foggy apparition. I've been to the Triangular Field. Liked it there

Would be cool though to have something happen while there

I've heard the stories also, and read how psychics describe the place as haunted and evil... so, my feelings the first time I saw it were unexpected. I fell in love with it.. it is absolutely my favorite place on the entire battlefield. I find it peaceful.....soothing.

I've been there many times, half of those at night... Only once did I have an unusual experience.....

recently, last week, I was walking in the field and found a crater....a huge crater.... the rocks around it were burnt black, one half burnt..and there was a strange green icky substance in the bottom of the crater... it was a huge crater, by the way,..... probably a good 2 ft deep and 5 to 6 ft in diameter... odd...

I've heard more of these ghost stories about the triangular field than any other place in Gettysburg.

Ok, here is my accounts from gettysburg. I have been there twice. The first year I went, I experenced a quite a few things. Yeah, I did the ghost tours, nothing happened there at all. Actually, one story was quite funny. A man smelled death in this area, I look around and see a dumpster. Anyway, I will number my accounts and a few from my sisters. Keep in mind that I do believe in ghosts, but I am a big skeptic. Something has to be pretty real for me to actually mention it. I love debunking things and maybe some of these could be, but I could not.

1. I was camping in a cabin at round top campgrounds on taneytown road. I walked outside and smelled sulfur like if gunpowder was burning. I know the smell because I shoot a blackpowder rifle. The thing was, I smelled it then it was gone. Normally that smell hangs in the air for quite some time. My sister also smelled it but not my wife or nephew. Also, at this point, I had no idea you could smell ghosts or any type of paranormal events.

2. At Devils Den, at the top almost to the paved road, near the sharpshooters spot, my sister and I could smell pipe tobacco. After hearing about it on a ghost tour, it made me think. I searched everywhere for someone witha pipe or cigar, only one couple was around, not smoking. My nephew also smelled it, but not my wife. Again, you smell it for a second and its gone.

3. In the triangular field, I had absolutely no camera problems. I did hear cannon fire very distant, and it was dark. Maybe someone poaching, I don't know, but I heard it. My sisters camera went flying out of her hand after she was mocking the ghost tour guy. When I heard about the story of the confederate sharpshooter getting dragged into differnt poses, I respectably asked for permission. I had no problem. I did not witness the event with my sister's camera, but it went past my wife, who was standing in front of her. Also, I have felt a cold spot in that area as well. It was roughly half way into the field towards the back.

4. In the cabin we were staying at, I saw my sisters phone slide across the table when I was going to sleep. I heard something and turned the light on. I was watching the area I heard it in and it slid again. My wife would not look, but she heard it. No, it was not on and not set to vibrate. We talked in the cabin 2 hours before we called it a day, it did not move. Also, the table was pourous, like rock. The next night I kept hearing a sound, it stopped when I asked it too. That was weird.

Thats about it. I do have some screwy pictures too. Now, that was my first year there, events happening within a weeks time. I went down the next year in the end of october, nothing unusual occured at all. I have a lot of picture with orbs in them, from the first year. The second year I took pictures, I found very few. The only pics I remember off the top of my head, were from Sach's bridge. It was drizzling too, so I doubt the're any good.

Ghost Whispers

I have recently read a book about ghosts at Gettysburg and one of the authors favorite things to do is leave a tape recorder running at various spots. He says that he picked up a voice saying clearly "Jeb". He also says that others have picked up noises and voices on their recorders. Don't know, could be fun, could be a waste of time, could lose your recorder.

leaving out tape

84th,

I don't hold much with leaving out tapes and interpreting any "noises" on them. What does work is to keep your magnetic or digital recorder on your person and verbally ask questions. I have even picked up EVP's during converstions with fellow investigators at haunted sites. Seems like if we talk the dec'd want in on the converstation too!

I've always been a skeptic on ghosts and hauntings, but love reading about it and watching shows on TV.

A bit off topic, what has begun to turn me around is watching GhostHunters on the sci fi channel, especially the St. Augustine Lighthouse show.

An awful lot of unexplainable things happen at Gettysburg and other battlefields, and the exact same things have happened to a lot of people through the years - too many people to be coincidental. So, skeptic or not, something is sure going on there and at the other places.

Supernatural

Chuck 58,

Have you ever been to Gettysburg? It's quite a trip!!
Anyone who is skeptic after visiting there just wasn't looking for the strange and unexplained!
Go to non-civil war experiences if you want to talk just about the supernatural. I am lucky enough to belong to an historical ghost hunting group and also love TAPS' shows on SciFi.

I have a couple experiences from there. First was with my old reenacting group the first MD US. We were camping in a small part of a filed jsut behind the large PA monument at the angle up agianst some trees. All night there was a large orange glowing orb hangning just above one particular tree. We all saw it who were there that night, about 20 of us or so. It lasted quite a while and could tell it was not from afar off because you coudl walk around it and see it just above that tree from all sides.

The second I'm not really sure it can be called an experience but definatley a feeling of something not quite right. Walking north on Baltimore Rd (I think, hard to remember its been a while) there is the restaraunt with all the bullet wholes still in it. On that same side of the street is a narrow alleyway between two historic buildings. I will not walk by it on the same side of the street.. and I actually try not to loook at it because I get this feeling of dred from it. Definatley not a place I would want to hang around.

I traveled to Devil's Den and my camera stopped working with full batteries and everything so I couldn't get any pictures. Then as soon as we left Devil's Den and the Triangular Field area, my camera started working again and I was able to take many pictures throughout the rest of the battlefield. Devil's Den and the Triangular Field are also some of the creepiest places for me to walk on that battlefield. There is definately something eerie there.

The problem with the Triangular Field now is that, thanks to the tree cutting, it's no longer triangular. The woods on the lefthand side of the triangle (as you stand facing the field with Devils Den at your back) are completely gone for acres. There's no longer that surrounded, closed-in feeling there.

I've made it a point to take pictures there, both film and digital, for the last ten years or so, and darn if I never had any trouble with my cameras at all. No orbs, or strange mists. No voices or noises, except the million and one tourists climbing the rocks behind me. Nothing supernatural, I'm afraid.

Thing is, I'm not a cynic--I'dlove to have something strange happen.

Maybe next time!

I have a re-enactor buddy who has many strange tales to tell. You can tell he's not just "whistlin' Dixie" either because you can literally see his hair beginning to stand up and the hair on his neck start to rise.

haunted gettysburg

i have heard alot about it and i know the spirits or ghosts of these soldiers can be heard but was told that they can also be seen where a person can meet them face to face that it can happen, dont matter where we are at there, but most important information was is that we dont look for the ghost or them they will come find us while we are there, and i am not scared of ghosts at all :smile:so there is nothing to afraid of. i even heard that confederate soldiers who fought and died there if they see us they will eventually protect us from harm i wonder about that,i am going to gettysburg for the 2010 july 1-5 battle 146th anniversary, and i was invited by one unit so am going to join in with them at camp and will be doing things there and i will also visit the battlefields to during time out to take some time to walk around there alone. i was told thats when something will happen some spirit will come to me or find me i plan to be ready for it when i go there next year i am all ready for it. no one will beleive it when i come home thats okay at least i will be the beleiver in all this. well until then i am glad you all had a good time dont be dissappointed when you go again go they are active during july 1-5 thats when it happened july 1863 so they are out at that time when they become very active because they must know we reenactors will be there thats why

We were at Gettysburg last year, right around this time. Rather than go in spring or fall, the wife decided she needed to spend Thanksgiving with her parents in Maine. I felt I needed to see Gettysburg, since it was on the way.

We planned to spend a day, making a quick tour. We stayed for a week and still didn't see everything.

It is an incredibly eerie place. We were there during the day and after dark until the park closed. Neither of us saw or heard anything unusual, but my wife caught some strange things on camera, at the Triangular Field and at Devil's Den.

It's virtually pitch black at night around there. She took two pics of the same place, a few seconds apart. In several of them there are tiny lights almost like fireflies. In the next shot, a couple of seconds later - nothing. These weren't visible to us, but showed on the camera.

She got a number of orb shots here and there and especially along Cemetery Ridge. I think these can be explained somehow but a couple of those shots were really interesting. Near the copse of trees, the orbs were lined up as if in a battle line just a few feet from the wall. Shooting into the field, she got a number of orbs, all grouped together here and there in the field.

Anyway, we plan to go back next year, this time in spring or summer when it isn't miserably cold. This old Southwestern boy ain't used to that kind of cold.

gettysburg hauntings

well here is one thing for sure. i know there are spirits of the union and confederate soldiers there on the field i have read the threads and see it. one thing i need to say is that they must still be there fighting day or night and thats why it made impressions in the grass because they were walking across it towards visitors and as they were doing so. we can and will hear rebel yells. drums. and more even rifles shootings. and cannons going off and even moaning screams. of dying. or wounded. on ground and sometimes we might even see them as they could appear i have heard that they can appear and we could see them, i know we can feel what they feel too sometimes can put us into like a trance feeling of sadness we cant do much but. respect them. i dont think its much harm with that. but as i am going up there next year i am going to be definitely ready for anything i am sure i ve had ancestors who were in civil war, if that be the case well then they could be around haunting there on battlefield who knows.if we want anything to happen or see them we have to really BELIEVE!!!!! anything will happen if we do believe. and then it will happen. and if we are alone it will be even be better if we are not around a crowd something will happen we will see something thats for sure. try not to be around too many people or crowd and most of us will experience something right there. that would be a sighting in front of us
