The Confederate commander, a brigadier general, allowed the colonel to inspect the Confederate position and decide for himself. After touring the camp and counting the guns, the colonel surrendered.

5. This Indiana native was a major of the regiment which was the first unit of the Army of the Ohio to arrive at and take part in the first day of the Battle of Shiloh. Later that year he was promoted to colonel and led a regiment in XIII Corps from Memphis thru the fall of Vicksburg. By the end of the war he was a brevet brigadier-general. Post-war he was elected mayor of a town in his native state. He was then appointed a territorial governor by President Grant, and served one term in the House of Representatives.
