Note: After this week, the WBTS Trivia Game moderator will be taking a well deserved vacation, so Game #54 will not begin till July 12.
Here are the questions for Week 6 of Game # 53
1. By an act of Congress in 1871, a government agency was established to compensate loyal Unionists in the so-called Confederate states, for damages inflicted by the Union army during the war. What was the name of this agency?
2. This Civil War general’s grandfather designed a warship which is still afloat today. Name the general.
3. This soldier did some interesting “firsts”. He was the first West Point cadet from a Southern state to resign from the academy in anticipation of the secession crisis. He was, by many accounts, the first Confederate officer to fire a shot at Fort Sumter. He also was for a time on the staff of J.E.B. Stuart, and commanded a unit of ‘foot dragoons’ under Wade Hampton toward the end of the war. Post-war, he practiced law in New York, taught at a military school in that state, moved to California where he engaged in mining and appeared in some silent movies. Name him.
4. An amendment to the U.S. Constitution which abolished and prohibited slavery was adopted in 1865, but some states of the Union at that time did not ratify the amendment until the 20th century. Name those states and the year each ratified the amendment.
5. On July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, a Michigan regiment and a North Carolina regiment met in a fight in which no less than 20 color-bearers of the two regiments combined were casualties. What was the name of that part of the Gettysburg battlefield where this fight took place?
Answers are due by 6pm (eastern) on Saturday, June 21. Good Luck!

5. McPherson's Woods

1. Southern Claims Commission2. Brigadier General Andrew Atkinson Humphreys
3. Henry Saxon Farley
4. (if you’re regarding the “Union” as being all 36 states after May 1865) Delaware 1901, Kentucky 1976, Mississippi 1995 (officially readmitted to the Union in 1870)
5. the McPherson (Herbst) woods
http://www.peer.state.ms.us/HiLites95.html I particularly like this source as it purports to “highlight” that state legislature’s achievements. It categorizes these highlights under headings such as “Finance”, “Education”, “Crime”, and “Economic Development”, etc., then at the bottom has a category for “Other”, in which at the very bottom of the “Other” category, it finally mentions the 13th, seemingly hiding it (almost comically) in the words, “provide for licensing of auctioneers; reconstitute board of directors of Pat Harrison Waterway Commission; ratify 13th Amendment to U.S. Constitution abolishing slavery; and designate the square dance a American Folk Dance of Mississippi.” Hah!
5. The 24th Michigan met the 26th North Carolina at McPherson’s Ridge (McPherson’s Farm or Woods, Herbst Woods, similar varients also OK). Sources vary, but the 24th lost 7 to 9 flag bearers, the 26th 13 or 14.
Wow! I what I think is a first, at least since I've been doing the game, every player got all 5 questions correct!
Either you all are getting better, or my questions are getting too easy.
Well, I'm taking some time off to visit my dear old mother, maybe play some golf and do some fishing up in Northern Michigan. I'll be away from the darned internet for a couple of weeks and be able to read some CW and other books, then hopefully come back refreshed with some fresh new questions for you.
Remember, Game #54 starts July 12.
Here are the final scores for Week 6 of game #53:
FIRST DIVISION
Gay Mathis - 30 (perfect!)
Rad2duhbone53 - 26
Sarladaise - 15 (thanks for the report)
Susan Sweet - 4 (on tour, I think)
According to the rules the prize is awarded to the high scorer of the game who has been a continually participating player (one who has player a least 2 full consecutive games) and who has not yet been awarded a prize.
I'm going to bend the rules a bit (I seem to get generous on the eve of a 2 week vacation), and award our Limey friend, Oxkern, the prize this week even tho he missed the first 2 weeks of Game #52. OX, I'll contact you shortly via PM.
While bending this rule, I have not lost sight of the fact that by using unbent rules, Hoosier would be this week's prize winner. Well, no matter, since he would be the next prize winner anyway, I'll just award him his prize now as well. No sense in waiting 9 weeks.
Some of our newer players may not be aware of the fact that Hoosier had been the Trivia Game moderator for 3 glorious years ("The Golden Age of the WBTS Trivia Game", I think they call it), before tricking me into doing it. I don't think he ever got a prize for that great work, but he deserved to. So let's think of this a a "Lifetime Achievement Award' for Mr. Hoosier. I'll PM you also soon, H.
I will try hard to get these fabulous prizes in the mail by Monday or Tuesday, but you will have to make your choices and get back to me by 6pm on Sunday.
So as far as Prizes, now everybody's got one, and, I hope everyone is happy with them, but we will start all over again on the dwindling list of prizes (tho I will attempt to add stuff) with Game #54, so the competition may be fierce! (hah!)
Meanwhile, why don't you all take a vacation? Enjoy the Holiday and forget about gasoline prices.
Thanks for playing. See you on July 12!
