1. This clergyman and educator joined the Rock City Guards soon after the war started. Mustered into a Tennessee Infantry regiment, he served in the Army of the Northwest under Robert E. Lee in the Cheat Mountain Campaign, and under Thomas J. Jackson that winter of 1861-62. In September he raised and was elected Captain of a company of a Tennessee Cavalry regiment. This regiment came under command of John Hunt Morgan and participated in Morgan’s 1862-63 “Christmas Raid”, and under Basil Duke, Morgan‘s Raid into Indiana and Ohio. While most of Morgan’s troops, and Morgan himself were captured, this man led over 100 men in an escape and led them 500 miles, mostly on foot, to Georgia, in time to serve under Nathan Bedford Forrest at the Battle of Chickamauga. In 1864 he rejoined Morgan and Duke, now a Major, he commanded a Battalion of Kentucky cavalry. Wounded at Cynthiana , Ky., he left the field for administrative work in Richmond, Va. Post-war he returned to ministry and education, for a time, the newspaper business. Name him.
2. You would have to be crazy not to know the name of this skirmish which took place in the aftermath of the Battle of Stone‘s River. It involved the 6th Tennessee Infantry under the command of Col. Joseph A. Cooper and Col. Daniel McCook, and the 3rd Confederate Cavalry. Name this skirmish.
3. Name the Union general who was born in New York, but was not an American citizen.
4. The M-1857 was the most common of its kind used during the war. What was another name for it?
5. Give the name of this person who would “seamingly” be someone that both Mary Todd Lincoln and Varina Davis had in common.
Answers are due by 6:00pm (eastern) on Saturday, January 19.
Good Luck!

Here are a few descriptions from various sources:
"The Third Confederate Cavalry (sometimes known as the 11th Alabama Cavalry) was organized in May, 1862 from units of the 11th Alabama Cavalry and troopers from Smith's 2nd Tennessee Cavalry. It was first commanded by Colonel James R. Howard, then Captain Patrick Henry Rice, and finally by Captain John McCaskill. For most of the War, its corps commander was General Joseph Wheeler"
"The 3rd Confederate Cavalry [aka: 11th Cavalry] was another of Gen'l Wheeler's commands for the greater part of the war. Seven of the companies were Alabamians and included the cavalry battalionn of Major W. N. Estes which merged into the 3rd. The regiment operated around the Army of Tennessee, and was in several battles and raids, and in innumerable skirmishes. These included Murfreesboro, Triune, Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga, Bridgeport, Trenton, McAfee's, and Noonday Creek. The regiment was used repeatedly for picket duty and for scouting and distinguished itself for gallantry and endurance."
" Third Confederate RegimentThis was another of Gen. Wheeler's commands, and seven of the companies were Alabamians. The regiment operated around the army of Tennessee, and was in several battles and raids, and in innumerable skirmishes. It lost severely in more than one of these fights, and its penons floated till the Confederacy was no more. "
