Sam,

In question 4, you put special emphasis on the words "designated artillery."

For the benefit of those of us who never heard the term "designated artillery regiment" before, could you please explain the difference, if there is any, between a "designated artillery" regiment and a plain old "artillery" regiment?

Hoosier, I'm sorry if that phrase "designated artillery' may have put you off.

My original problem was that I found a Dyer citation that
the 1st "Sustained greatest loss of any one Regiment in any one action of the war. 635 killed and wounded out of 900 engaged."

I ran with that and was soon rightfully challanged that several orther units, mostly infantry, claimed that distinction. That's why I narrowed the question down to an artillery regiment.

But in the process, I did find some sort of objection (I forget where) to the point that when the 1st Artillery was engaged in that action , that they were acting as infantry as opposed to the ordinary activity of an artillery regiment.

So, that is why I added the caveat about a regiment "designated" artillery.

So as I attempted to clarify for those who expected a normal action of an artillery regiment, I apparently semantically confused others, like yourself.

Sorry, but the point was that it was a regiment which, while acting in the role of infantry, it was a regiment designated as an artillery regiment.
