Hoosier, I'm sorry if that phrase "designated artillery' may have put you off.
My original problem was that I found a Dyer citation that
the 1st "Sustained greatest loss of any one Regiment in any one action of the war. 635 killed and wounded out of 900 engaged." I ran with that and was soon rightfully challanged that several orther units, mostly infantry, claimed that distinction. That's why I narrowed the question down to an artillery regiment. But in the process, I did find some sort of objection (I forget where) to the point that when the 1st Artillery was engaged in that action , that they were acting as infantry as opposed to the ordinary activity of an artillery regiment. So, that is why I added the caveat about a regiment "designated" artillery. So as I attempted to clarify for those who expected a normal action of an artillery regiment, I apparently semantically confused others, like yourself. Sorry, but the point was that it was a regiment which, while acting in the role of infantry, it was a regiment designated as an artillery regiment.
