The answers to the questions for Week 3:

11. In early October 1864, a large supply depot at Allatoona, GA, garrisoned by about 900 Federals under the command of Lt. Col. John E Tourtelotte was threatened by 3,000 soldiers of Hood’s army under the command of Maj. Gen. Samuel G. French. General Sherman ordered Brig. Gen. John M. Corse to reinforce Tourtelotte, but there was a question as to whether Corse’s force of 1,000 men would arrive before French attacked. At Kenesaw Mountain, about 16 miles away, Sherman with more reinforcements, fretted. Finally signal flags from Allatoona spelled out the letters , translated as “Corse is here”.

12. Walter Symonds Newhall. He had played international cricket for the US against Canada in 1859 and 1860, and against an English touring side in 1859. He is believed to be the first international cricketer of any nationality to have been killed in a war.

14. “ASCA” stood for the Army of the Confederate States of America. “PACS” stood for the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. The ACSA was to be a “Regular Army” a professional army, counterpart to the U.S. Regular Army. The PACS was to be an army of volunteer militias and other volunteers, and would be disbanded in favor of the ACSA when the war was won.

[Sorry, I screwed up the question, and part of the answer(above). Most of you intuited what I was getting at, but I must give a point to all players because of my error.]
