We lost one player from last week, but gained several, including former WBTS game moderator, hoosier. Welcome all.
The answers to the questions for Week 2:
6. Winfield Scott 1852 Whig
John C. Fremont 1856 Republican
George B. McClellan 1864 Democrat
Green Clay Smith 1876 Prohibition
Winfield S. Hancock 1880 Democrat
Neal S. Dow 1880 Prohibition
John Walcott Phelps 1880 American/Anti-Masonic
James Baird Weaver (Bvt.) 1880 Greenback Labor, 1892 Populist
Benjamin Franklin Butler 1884 Greenback/Anti-Monopoly
Clinton Bowen Fisk 1888 Prohibition
John McCauley Palmer 1896 National Democratic (Gold Democrats)
7. Mary Ann (Ball) Bickerdyke (I expect you all noted that ‘outranked’ is in quotes, right?)
While both Logan and Bickerdyke (and staff and Hazen, apparently) rode at the head of the XV Corps, on May 24, 1865, Logan was not a civilian, nor did he (literally or figuratively) outrank General Sherman. The same would hold for Hazen.
(For a story about the 'outranked' thing, see my new post "How Bickerdyke 'outranked' Sherman" in the "Civil War History - General Discussion" area.)
8. Joseph L. Pierce (aka Joseph A. Pierce) was born in Canton, Kwangtung Province, China.
(See ‘Curveball’ in my New Game post). As no player whiffed at this curveball (I guess I gave one too many other clues?), I’ll assume you are telling me that I should be more devious in future with questions of this type.
9. (It was April Fools Day!) The fish was a Shad, and there are also several variations of this story. Here is one (mine): Gen. Lee ordered Gen. Pickett to hold Five forks at all hazard. Nevertheless, Pickett and Gen. Fitzhugh Lee accepted an invitation from Gen. Thomas Rosser to attend a shad bake (libations may have been involved) approximately a mile away from the front at Five Forks. The happy generals did not hear the sound of small arms fire in the initial minutes of the battle and, leaderless, the Confederate forces at Five Forks were overcome and routed by federal troops.
10. Angry bees, upset by a shell which had smashed into their hive.
[Note: Players, please check your answers for any inadvertent errors before posting them. I think I can tell a misspelling or mis-keying of words most of the time, and since this is not a spelling contest, will usually let that slide. Numbers are a different story.]
Congratulations to Blockaderunner who, making up for last week, posted the only perfect score this week.
