This question may or may not be more representative of the types of questions you might expect.
It is more on the easy side, I expect, than my first 'sample question'.
I hope to find a balance between 'easy' and 'difficult', but with a varied audience, I know I can't please everyone. So as Ricky Nelson advised me, I'll have to please myself.
OK, here's the question:
Ulysses S. Grant used several horses during the war. Which horse, allegedly a thoroughbred, did Grant use during the Vicksburg Campaign?
Give the name of the horse and the circumstances in which it was acquired by General Grant.
I'll leave this question up thru Friday 6-22.
Again, this is partly a sort of a means to see how many folks might want to play the game; so even if you can't find the answer, please respond if only to comment on the question.
Any and all comments, obsrvations, or ideas about this and/or the first 'sample question' will be welcome.
Later.
Sam

Grant's horse in question is Kangaroo, who had been a broken down and decrepit horse left on the Shiloh Battlefield by the Confederates. Grant's exquisite eye for horseflesh saw that this was an exceptional animal requiring but rest and care, and so it proved.

"At the battle of Shiloh the Confederates left on the field a rawboned horse, very ugly and apparently good for nothing. As a joke, the officer who found this animal on the field, sent it with his compliments, to Colonel Lagow, one of my father's aides-de-camp, who always kept a very excellent mount and was a man of means. The other officers of the staff "jollied" the colonel about this gift. When my father saw him, he told the colonel that the animal was a thoroughbred and a valuable mount and that if he, Lagow, did not wish to keep the horse he would be glad to have him. Because of his appearance he was named "Kangaroo," and after a short period of rest and feeding and care he turned out to be a magnificent animal and was used by. my father during the Vicksburg campaign."
Fredrick Grant son of General grant.
I think this was a good question. The research was pretty easy, about five minutes. However, the question required attention as Grant more than one horse in the campaign with a good story. The other was "Jeff Davis" a horse captured in a raid on Jeff Davis' brother's plantation. You had to read the question closely so that you would know thtat the horse being looked for was "Kangaroo" the thoroughbread.
I thought that the first question was a little too complex and could not be really reasearched in the tie I had. I like a game that chalanges but doesn't take all week to research. My tow cents, confederate.
The horse's name was Cincinnati and was given him by an admirer in St. Louis named -- coincidentally -- Grant. INCORRECT

A relatively ugly horse was left at Shiloh by an unknown Confederate. Eventually the animal came to Grant, who discerned it was a thoroughbred. After recovery time, the horse's merits shone out. Grant called him Kangaroo.
At the battle of Shiloh , the confederates left a horse on the field . As a joke the officer who found the horse sent it to Colonel Lagow, one of Grant's aid-de-camp . The hourse was a rawbone horse, very ugly and apparently good for nothing . When Grant saw him he told the colonel that the animal was a thoroughbred and a valuable mount and if he , Lagow , did not wish to keep the horse he would be glad to have him . Because of his appeaance he was name Kangaroo and ater a short period of rest and feeding and care he turned out to be a magnifcent animal and was useed by Grant during the Vicksburg Campaign .
I beleive its name was Kangaroo... and a colonel found it left behind by rebs after the battle of shilo. The Col. didn't want it because it was too skinny and looked bad, but Grant recognized it as a thoroughbred and told the Col. he would take it.
