Time to begin a new game. New players are welcome to join the game at any time, but the first week of any game is always an especially good time.
For those of you who may have been looking in on the game without posting answers, you’re certainly welcome to keep doing that if you wish, but if you’ve ever thought of joining in but never gotten around to it, here’s your call to arms.
Here are the questions for Week 1 of Game # 46.
1. In what battle did cadets from Virginia Military Institute help defeat Federal troops under Gen. Franz Sigel?
2. At what Virginia battle were six Confederate generals captured?
3. What Union general was mortally wounded at the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg), just two days after he had received his field command?
4. What kinsman of Robert E. Lee served as Governor of Virginia and later as a general in the Spanish-American War?
5. (Two point question) When the Orleans Guard Battalion from Louisiana arrived at Shiloh in mid-battle, what did they have to do to get their fellow Confederates to stop shooting at them?
Answers to the questions for Week 1 will be due by 6 PM EDT on Saturday, April 7.
1- VMI cadets charged and captured a Union battery at the Battle of New Market, 15 May, '64;
2- Six CSA generals were captured at the Battle of Sayler's Creek 6 Apr, '65 trying to keep the juggernaut Union Army off Lee's tail in his fateful retreat from Petersburg/Richmond;
3- Newly appointed commander of the Federal XII Corps, US Major Genl Joseph King Fenno Mansfield killed at Antietam;
4- Gen RELee's nephew- Fitzhugh Lee;
5- The Orleans Guard Battalion at Shiloh were nattily clad in blue coats- after taking friendly fire, the Guards smartly turned their coats inside out so as not to present nice blue targets to their pals in arms.

Congratulations to all those who played in Week 1. Everyone answered all five questions correctly.
The official answers for the questions for Week 1:
1. The VMI cadets participated in the Battle of New Market, 5/15/64. Four days after the Confederate victory, Sigel was relieved of command.
2. The six Confederate generals were captured at Sayler’s Creek (spellings vary). My list of those captured seems to differ from some others (my source says the six generals were Montgomery Corse, Richard Ewell, G.W.C. Lee, Eppa Hunton, Joseph Kershaw, and Dudley DuBose), but everyone correctly identified the battle.
3. Gen. Joseph K. Mansfield, commander of the Union XII Corps, was mortally wounded at Antietam.
4. Fitzhugh Lee, Marse Robert’s nephew, served in these positions.
5. The Orleans Guard, whose uniforms were dress blue like the Yankees’, had to turn their uniforms inside out to stop the friendly fire.
