A good showing by those of our players who managed to fight their way through the ice and snow to get to their computers this week. Of the seven players who submitted answers to the questions for Week 1, there was only one incorrect answer in the bunch.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. The quote is attributed to Albert Sidney Johnston, whose prophecy went unfulfilled.

2. My source indicated that maps were sometimes printed on either linen or muslin, so I accepted both answers. Printing on these substances facilitated washing the maps when soiled, a not uncommon necessity. It also made them more durable and easier to fold.

3. The Pathfinder was John C. Fremont.

4. Future President James A. Garfield was Rosecrans’ chief-of-staff.

5. Patrick Cleburne (Ireland) and Camille Armand Jules Marie, Prince de Polignac (France) were both Confederate major generals born outside the U.S.

Scores at the end of Week 1:

FIRST DIVISION

Sarladaise 6
SamGrant 6

SECOND DIVISION

20th Mass 6
ewc 6
Ole 6
Rad2duhbone53 6
Texaswildcat 5
