Welcome back to Sarladaise. You picked a great country to visit on your vacation.
With one week left in Game # 43, SamGrant leads the First Division and continues his pursuit of perfection with 30 points. Miss Markie leads the Second Division by a one-point margin over Rad2duhbone53.
The answers to the questions for Week 5:
21. The hill at the tip of the fishhook was Culp’s Hill.
22. Jefferson Davis’ first wife was the daughter of Zachary Taylor, making Davis Taylor’s son-in-law.
23. Smith carried an umbrella – specifically, a blue parasol. Since a source was cited, I also accepted the answer of a beaver hat.
24. The official title was the Grand Review of the Grand Armies of the Republic, usually shortened to Grand Review. More than 200,000 soldiers participated over two days, with the Army of the Potomac parading on May 23, followed by the members of Sherman’s army the next day.
25. Whiting, first in the class of 1845 at West Point, set a record for the highest grades ever attained at the U.S. Military Academy. The man who broke his record in 1903 was Douglas MacArthur. A couple of you said that Whiting was first in every subject, but my source doesn’t indicate whether or not that was true. If you can cite a source confirming that Whiting was first in every subject during his four years – and that nobody else matched that accomplishment until MacArthur came along – then I’ll give credit for that answer.
