Default Trivia Game # 43 - Week 4

I expect to be out and about during the early part of this evening, so I’m going to post this week’s questions early.

Here are the questions for Week 4 of Game # 43.

16. Who, at the time of his death in 1933, was the last surviving general officer from either side in the Civil War? (This question was supplied by CWT member Ole.)

17. What was the “Pemberton oak?”

18. What Confederate general led the “Beefsteak Raid” in September 1864?

19. When Abraham Lincoln ordered a Thanksgiving Sunday in September 1864, what two Union victories were being celebrated?

20. (Two point question) What Confederate general jumped the gun by wiring the Richmond authorities the news that the Confederates had won the Battle of Shiloh?

Those who have not yet responded to the questions for Week 3 still have until this evening, November 25, to do so.

Answers to the questions for Week 4 will be due by 6 PM EST Saturday, December 2.

Good luck!

16. Adelbert Ames
17. I can only find Revolutionary War references to the Pemberton Oak, located near the TN-VA border (now downed) it was a rallying point for Continentals. The only guess I had was that it was a nickname for the defender of Vicksburg, John C. Pemberton. INCORRECT
18. Wade Hampton
19. The fall of Atlanta to Sherman and the capture of Mobile Bay by Farragut.
20. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard

After four weeks of play, SamGrant continues to answer every question correctly and is home free in the First Division for this game with 24 points. Miss Markie leads the Second Division with 23, followed closely by Rad2duhbone53 with 22 and Texaswildcat with 21.

The answers to the questions for Week 4:

16. Adelbert Ames was the last surviving general.

17. CSA General Pemberton met USA General Grant under an oak tree to discuss the terms of surrender at Vicksburg. The tree was known thereafter as the Pemberton oak. Miss Markie is correct that “Pemberton oak” is associated with the defender of Vicksburg, but it was an actual tree, not a nickname for the general.

18. Wade Hampton was the leader of the cavalry forces involved in the September 1864 Beefsteak Raid, whose purpose was to capture cattle from Union troops.

19. The celebration was declared in honor of the capture of Atlanta and the naval victory at Mobile Bay. (In light of question 18, presumably beefsteak was not the main course at the Thanksgiving Sunday meal.)

20. P.G.T. Beauregard sent this premature message.

Scores at the end of Week 4:

FIRST DIVISION

SamGrant 24

SECOND DIVISION

Miss Markie 23
Rad2duhbone53 22
Texaswildcat 21
ewc 16
Calicoboy 15
RivrRat 5
Ginefur4 4
Jamieva 4
Subace914 3

PS - Sam, I see you submitted a post just a minute before I submitted mine. Yes, Texaswildcat's post was the last I received for this week.
