Several players who’ve been away from the action for a while rejoined us this week. Welcome back to Calicoboy, Miss Markie, and RivrRat.

Wherever Sarladaise went on vacation must be a good spot, since Robert B. Condon has apparently joined her.

In their absence, SamGrant has opened up an early six-point lead in the First Division. In the Second Division, Calicoboy, ewc, and Miss Markie share the lead with six points apiece.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. George McClellan entered West Point at age 15 and graduated second in the class of 1846. (John Gibbon entered at a similarly young age, but he was in the class of 1847.)

2. Old No. 3 is more commonly known today as “The General,” subject of a famous hijacking by Union operatives.

3. Robert Todd Lincoln, the only one of Abe’s sons who survived to adulthood, served as Secretary of War under Garfield and Arthur.

4. Senator John Sherman, later three times a presidential candidate, was the brother of William T. Sherman. (The question asked for the name of the senator, not the general.)

5. The U.S. government did not officially mourn the death of former President John Tyler, a Virginian who had voted for secession and was serving in the Confederate Congress at the time of his death.

The scores at the end of Week 1:

FIRST DIVISION

SamGrant 6

SECOND DIVISION

Calicoboy 6
ewc 6
Miss Markie 6
Rad2duhbone53 5
RivrRat 5
Texaswildcat 5
Ginefur4 4
