I will be traveling tonight and tomorrow, so I'm going to post the questions for Week 6 early.
Those who have not yet entered responses to the questions for Week 5 still have time to do so. The usual 6 PM Saturday deadline will not apply for Week 5; however, you should make sure to get your answers in before I return Sunday afternoon.
Here are the questions for Week 6:
26. On what mountain was the "Battle Above the Clouds" staged?
27. Why was Feb. 11, 1861 noteworthy for both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis?
28. What town in McKean County, PA was founded by a Civil War general?
29. What transportation magnate effectively gave a 1,700-ton vessel bearing his name to the Federal government for use as a warship during the Civil War?
30. (Two point question) What future Civil War general served the shortest term as superintendent at West Point of anyone who has ever held the office?
Answers to the questions for Week 6 will be due by 6 PM EST Saturday, November 4.
Congratulations to SamGrant, winner of the First Division for Game # 42 with a perfect score of 36 points, and to Rad2duhbone53 and Texaswildcat, co-winners of the Second Division with scores of 31 points each.
Here are the answers to the questions for Week 6:
26. The Battle Above the Clouds took place at Lookout Mountain, TN, on a day that was so foggy that the action could not be seen from the foot of the mountain.
27. Both Lincoln and Davis left their homes to begin their journeys to their inaugurations as president, Lincoln leaving Springfield for Washington and Davis leaving Beauvoir for Montgomery.
28. The town founded by a Civil War general was Kane, PA. (I thought I might get someone to bite on Custer City, but there were no takers there.) The general who founded it was Thomas L. Kane, the man who recruited the well-known Pennsylvania Bucktails regiment, but the question asked for the name of the town, not the general.
29. Cornelius Vanderbilt donated the ship which became the U.S.S. Vanderbilt. I found one source that said it was an outright gift and another that said Vanderbilt accepted the sum of one dollar in payment for the ship.
30. P.G.T. Beauregard held the office of West Point superintendent Jan. 23-28, 1861. His Southern leanings were probably the reason for his prompt removal.
