Happy to have two new players mustering into the game this week. Welcome to Brandklipparen and Ginefur4.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. Robert E. Lee became president of Washington College in Lexington, VA, which is now known as Washington and Lee. Both the general and his famous horse, Traveller, are buried on its campus.

2. Lt. Col. Rutherford B. Hayes and Sgt. William McKinley, both of the 23rd Ohio, saw action at Antietam.

3. Columbia, SC, was set afire on this date, during its occupation by Sherman’s army.

4. Jefferson Davis, who always considered himself a military man first, was # 23 in West Point’s Class of 1828.

5. The fort about which the song was written was held by Corse at the Battle of Allatoona, GA, (aka Allatoona Pass) on Oct. 5, 1864. I do not mark off for spelling unless the misspelling clearly makes the answer wrong. Since there were no Civil War battles fought in the vicinity of Altoona, PA, I accepted “Altoona” as a correct response.

The scores at the end of Week 1:

FIRST DIVISION

Robert B. Condon 6
SamGrant 6
Sarladaise 6

SECOND DIVISION

20thMass 6
ewc 6
Miss Markie 6
Rad2duhbone53 6
Brandklipparen 5
Ginefur4 5
Texaswildcat 4
