Welcome to our newest player, Gunny, and welcome back to Miss Markie, returned from her summer sojourns.
Here are the answers to the questions for Week 3.
11. George (Pap) Thomas, who led the stand that helped prevent Chickamauga from becoming a complete disaster for the Union, was known thereafter as the “Rock of Chickamauga.”
12. John B. Gordon was the first head of the UCV.
13. The lapel buttons were cut from copper pennies (which featured an Indian head at the time) and were emblems of the Copperheads, the anti-war wing of the Democratic Party.
14. The May 11, 1864 Battle of Yellow Tavern took place while the Battle of Spotsylvania (Court House) was going on. The cavalry battle arose when Stuart was sent to intercept Union cavalry forces led by Philip Sheridan, which had mounted a raid on Richmond as a diversionary tactic.
15. Curtis was the winner at the Battle of Westport, Missouri. The Union victory in this battle effectively ended the last Confederate offensive thrust west of the Mississippi, which had been led by Sterling (Pap) Price. (I didn't intend to ask two questions involving generals nicknamed "Pap" this week, but it seems to have worked out that way.)
At the end of Week 3, SamGrant maintains the lead in the First Division, while we have a three-way tie for the lead in the Second Division among 20thMass, ewc, and Sarladaise.
