Welcome to our newest player, 20thMass, who is off to a good start with a perfect score of 6 points in Week 1. We had five other players with perfect scores of six points each and three with scores of five.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. Nathan Bedford Forrest was the Tennessean who, with no prior military training, advanced from private to lieutenant general in three years.

2. The tomb of the Confederate unknown soldier is located at Beauvoir, Jefferson Davis’ home in Biloxi, MS. Note that the question specifically asked for the city and state, so I could not accept the answer of Beauvoir, MS.

3. Anthracite burns with little smoke, making it easier for blockade runners to avoid detection. For that reason, the Union attempted to cut off shipments of anthracite to foreign ports, so that the blockade runners couldn’t buy the stuff in those ports.

4. George Meade, Winfield Hancock, and Oliver Howard received the official Thanks of Congress for their actions at Gettysburg.

5. Freeman Gosden played the character of Amos on the “Amos ‘n’ Andy” radio program. As I have subsequently learned, he also played Kingfish, as well as several other minor characters, on the show.

The scores at the end of Week 1:

FIRST DIVISION

Robert B. Condon 6
SamGrant 6
Aggie80 5

SECOND DIVISION

20thMass 6
ewc 6
Rad2duhbone53 6
Sarladaise 6
bgl1952 5
Texaswildcat 5
