Here are the questions for Week 3 of Game # 40.

11. A bridge named Rohrbach Bridge figured prominently in a Civil War battle. By what name did this bridge become more commonly known?

12. Why was CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest’s victory at Okolona, MS on 2/22/64 a bitter one for him?

13. The British shipping firm Fraser, Trenholm, & Co. was very active in wartime blockade running. What was the first name of the Mr. Trenholm to which the firm’s name referred?

14. Flora Cooke (maiden name) belonged to the families of what three Civil War generals? (You must name all three generals to get credit for a correct answer.)

15. (Two point question) What controversial military decision did Jefferson Davis make on July 17, 1864?

Answers to the questions for Week 3 will be due by 6 PM EDT on Saturday, July 22.

Good luck!

11) Antietam Bridge where Burnsides first demonstrates his inability to cross a body of water without great delay. He would repeat his performance almost three months later at Fredericksburg. INCORRECT

12) Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's brother, Jeffrey, was killed in the battle. The grieving Forrest wrote: "I regret the loss of some gallant officers. The death of my brother, Col. Jeffrey E. Forrest, is deeply felt by his brigade as well as by myself, and it is but just to say that for sobriety, ability, prudence, and bravery he had no superior of his age."

13) George A. Trenholm

14) Flora Cooke was related to J. E. B. Stuart by marriage. Her father, Brig. Gen. Philip St. George Cooke, remained loyal to the Union. Like her, her brother, Brig. John Rogers Cooke, was Confederate.

15) Jeff Davis sacked Uncle Joe Johnston and replaced him with a man who would oversee the destruction of the Army of Tennessee, John Bell Hood.

After the third week, Robert B. Condon maintains his lead in the First Division, while Rad2duhbone53 and Traveller remain tied for first in the Second Division, with perfect scores of 18 points each, but with three more players close behind them.

The answers to the questions for Week 3:

11. That which was known as Rohrbach’s Bridge prior to the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) has been commonly known as Burnside’s Bridge since, after the general who launched a costly attack across it. I don’t believe it is commonly called Antietam Bridge – at least, not as commonly as it is called Burnside’s.

12. Forrest’s brother Jeffrey was killed in that battle.

13. George. Headquartered in Liverpool with an office in Charleston, Fraser, Trenholm, & Co. was half owned by George Trenholm, who became the Confederate Secretary of the Treasury.

14. Flora Cooke Stuart was the wife of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, sister of Confederate General John Rogers Cooke, and daughter of Union General Philip Cooke. As a couple of players pointed out, Flora’s younger sister married Jacob Sharpe, who received the rank of general before the war’s end, so Sharpe is also a correct answer.

15. On 7/17/64, Davis officially removed Joe Johnston from command of the Confederate Army of Tennessee (then defending Atlanta) and replaced him with John Bell Hood.

The scores at the end of Week 3:

FIRST DIVISION

Robert B. Condon 16
SamGrant 11

SECOND DIVISION

Rad2duhbone53 18
Traveller 18
bgl1952 17
Texaswildcat 17
Gary 16
ewc 6
TomH 5
