After two weeks of play in Game 40, Rad2duhbone53 has taken the lead in the Second Division, while Robert B. Condon is going to be tough to catch in the First Division.
At the conclusion of Game 39, SamGrant told me he expected to be away for several weeks and gave me some questions to use in his absence. (Question # 5 last week and # 9 this week were Sam's.) Sam has returned sooner than expected, but I had already posted the questions for this week, so he quite properly disqualified himself from answering question # 9.
We had varying answers on question # 10. My source said that Stevens raised the first U.S. flag over the city of Richmond and he raised it over the Virginia statehouse, which had served as the Confederate Capitol building. Some of you said that he was the first Federal officer to arrive in the city and some said he led two companies of cavalry into the city, but my source didn't mention either of those things. If you have a source to back up your answer, please enter an appeal before 6 PM Tuesday.
The answers to the questions for Week 2:
6. Grant first faced off against Lee at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864.
7. A “color” was carried by dismounted troops. A standard was carried by mounted units and an ensign was flown from a naval vessel.
8. Stonewall County, TX, is named for the Confederate general. There is a Jackson County in Texas, but that one is named for Andrew Jackson.
9. Ironically, Tad was attending a play when he learned that his father had been shot while attending a different play. Tad was at Grove’s Theatre, watching a performance of “Aladdin? Or His Wonderful Lamp,” when the stage manager interrupted the play to announce to the audience that the president had been shot.
10. Stevens, a Massachusetts man, raised the first U.S. flag over the city as Federal troops took control of it. He raised it at the Virginia statehouse, where the Confederate Congress had met.
The scores at the end of Week 2 (pending appeals):
On April 3rd, 1865 Stevens led two companies of the 4th Mass. Volunteer Cavalry into Richmond, and was the first Federal Officer to enter the city upon its fall.
