Gary submitted the following answers by private message this week (but promises to enter his answers by post from now on).

Hi Hoosier,

I'm out of town and won't be around after tonight to post. I don't want to post early.

1) Bounty jumpers were folks whose enlistment was motivated by prospect of collecting the bounty. They would then disappear and enlist elsewhere and collect another bounty.

2) Cold Harbor

3) What did the Richmond Church contribute? Ding-dong. Bells for guns.

4) Ladies Ironclads because the ladies of the Confederacy contributed towards their construction.

5) The Rocking Chair was originally the property of Mrs. Ford. The military seized it as evidence and then kept it at the Smithsonian. Mrs. Ford eventually got it back and sold it to Henry Ford, the auto maker who displayed it in his museum.

Welcome to our newest player, TomH.

We had a few people out on vacation this week (including most of the First Division), but we had a lot of good scores from those who played.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. Bounty jumpers were Union soldiers who joined the army to get the enlistment bonus (or bounty), then deserted. Many of them enlisted again somewhere else, where they could claim another bounty.

2. The Battle of Cold Harbor was named for the nearby tavern which served nothing but cold meals.

3. In addition to donating money for the artillery, the church donated its bronze bell for the purpose of making cannons.

4. The three vessels were bought with funds raised by the Ladies’ Gunboat Societies (who sold quilts, held rummage sales, and did numerous other sorts of things to raise money for the purpose of buying ironclads) throughout the South.

5. Henry Ford (the automaker) bought the chair from Mrs. Ford.

The scores at the end of Week 1:

FIRST DIVISION

Robert B. Condon 4

SECOND DIVISION

bgl1952 6
ewc 6
Gary 6
Rad2duhbone53 6
Texaswildcat 6
Traveller 6
TomH 5
