Default Trivia Game # 39 - Week 4

Here are the questions for Week 4 of Game # 39.

16. Whom did McClellan put in charge of military intelligence for the Army of the Potomac in 1861?

17. What was the navigational advantage of the “double-ender” naval vessel?

18. What Confederate general’s name (his real first and middle name, not a nickname) could be viewed as a statement of the Southern cause?

19. In April, 1863, Grant’s troops boarded transports at a landing on the Louisiana side of the Mississippi to be ferried to Bruinsburg, whence they proceeded to the eventual capture of Vicksburg. What was the name of the landing? (Hint – shares its name with the title of a Charles Dickens book.)

20. (Two point question) Who was the only Civil War general who was a native of Russia?

Answers to the questions for Week 4 will be due by 6 PM on Saturday, June 17.

Good luck!

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 4.

16. McClellan's chief of military intelligence was Allan Pinkerton, who had a tendency to overestimate the strength of opposing forces.

17. The double-ender, a canoe-shaped side wheeler with a rudder and pilot house at each end, could change course simply by reversing engines, which was advantageous in narrow rivers that fed into coastal sounds, where there was no room to turn around.

18. General Gist's first and middle names were States Rights, surely a statement of the Southern cause if ever there was one.

19. The troops boarded at Hard Times Landing.

20. The Russian Union General's anglicized name was John Basil Turchin. His real name was Ivan Vasilovich Turchinoff, a graduate of Russia’s Imperial Military School.

I don't have time to post the scoreboard right now. I'll do that either later tonight or some time tomorrow.
