I have had NO time this week to do much research as it is graduation week at my school, but I do want to try to put something up so here goes:

1. I believe Lincoln had some folding currency from the Confederate States of America.
2. Johnston was pallbearer at the funeral of William T. Sherman.
3. My guess would be lemons, his favorite wartime fruit.
4. My best guess is Andrew Johnson, senator from Tenn. and later VP and Pres. INCORRECT
5. I am only guessing that this class adopted "Duty, Honor, Country" which became the motto of the USMA much later. INCORRECT

Welcome to our newest player, IrishBrigadeLadd, and welcome back to Aggie80, RivrRat, and Robert B. Condon. A happy Memorial Day to all of our players.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1:

A1. The currency originated in the CSA. Lincoln was carrying a $5 Confederate note, presumably a memento of his visit to Richmond after Grant had taken that city. (I didn’t mean to spark any political debates with this question. Those who identified the country as the CSA and those who identified it as a section of the United States in rebellion all got credit for their answers.)

A2. Johnston caught pneumonia at William T. Sherman’s funeral.

A3. Lemons are often found strewn around Jackson’s gravesite. Jackson frequently sucked on them, believing they would help with his dyspepsia.

A4. Greenhow tried to implicate Henry Wilson of Massachusetts, who would become Grant’s second Vice President in 1873. Greenhow allowed Federal agents to find packets of what appeared to be love letters from Wilson. The letters were determined to be forgeries.

A5. The 1854 class motto was “When Our Country Calls.” Members of the class would eventually hear the call from different directions, as 23 served in the Union army and 14 in the Confederate forces.

Because I'm late in posting these answers, the deadline for appeals will be extended to 6 PM Wednesday this week.

Scores at the end of Week 1:

FIRST DIVISION

Robert B. Condon 6
SamGrant 6
Aggie80 4

SECOND DIVISION

bgl1952 6
RivrRat 6
Sarladaise 6
Texaswildcat 6
Traveller 6
Rad2duhbone53 4
IrishBrigadeLadd 3
MissMarkie 3

Did you manage to get to Valverde or Glorietta Pass?

I get most of my questions out of books. I expect to be asking more questions based on the same book from which I got the question about the class motto. Therefore, I have to decline to disclose my source for that question.

If any of those of you who got the correct answer would care to disclose your source to Rad2duhbone, feel free to either make a post or send him a private message.
