ewc, I thank you for posting the link to this very interesting article. The author makes some very good arguments in support of the contention that Col. Weygant was Crane's inspiration.

I thought about this and thought about this. Unfortunately, I finally decided I just don't think I can give you credit for your answer, because the question specifically asked for the name of a general, and I can find nothing to indicate that Weygant ever attained that rank.

I have asked Robert B. Condon, who prepared the questions and answers for this game, to provide his source in support of Gen. Van Petten. If he is willing to reveal it, I will post it on this thread after I get it.
