Default Trivia Game # 36 - Week 5

Here are the questions for Week 5 of Game # 36.

21. Though he is thought of as a Pennsylvania man, George Meade was not born in Pennsylvania, nor even in the United States. In what country was he born?

22. What did it mean for a Civil War soldier to be “galvanized?”

23. Capt. Richard W. Dowling commanded the Confederate forces at what battle?

24. The site of John Wilkes Booth’s death was approximately 11 miles due east of the site of the death of what Confederate general?

25. (Two point question) Federal troops set fire to the University of Alabama in April 1865 but spared the home of U of A professor Deloffre because a flag other than that of the CSA flew over it. What nation’s flag was over the professor’s house?

Answers to the questions for Week 5 will be due by 6 PM EST Saturday, February 18.

Good luck!

21. Spain

22. A 'galvanized soldier' was won who, typically, was captured by the opposition, and then was convinced or agreed to enlist and/or fight for that opposing army. There were 'galvanized' Yanks as well as Rebs.

23. 2nd Battle of Sabine Pass

24. Stonewall Jackson died in that area (Thornburg?), so that's my answer. I'd would not doubt that other generals may have died near there.

25. The FRENCH flag. Maybe the liked the colors!

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 5.

21. Meade was born in Cadiz, Spain, on December 31, 1815.

22. A galvanized soldier was one who had begun by fighting for one side, was captured, and wound up fighting for the other side.

23. Dowling commanded a force of 43 men armed with rifles and six small cannon at the Battle of Sabine Pass, TX in September 1863. Dowling and his Confederates repelled a vastly superior Union attack force. All the men received silver medals from Jefferson Davis, the only such medals given by the CSA.

24. The Garrett farm where Booth died was 11 miles east of Guinea Station, where Stonewall Jackson had died two years earlier. Booth was attempting to make his way to Guinea Station, because he believed he could find a Confederate artillery unit there that might aid in his escape.

20. Professor Andre Deloffre, professor of French at the university, flew the flag of France over his home.

Robert B. Condon maintains his lead in the First Division. In the Second Division, Sockknitter got her answers in just ahead of the deadline and has now taken a one point lead with one week left in the game.
