OK, for the benefit of Sam Grant and anyone else who has been wondering about the significance of my weekly "Bumping the thread" posts - I normally try to post the questions for the coming week before I post the answers to the week just concluded. Since the threads appear on the message board in order according to the one on which the most recently approved post appears, that means the thread for the week just concluded shows up on top of the thread for the current week.
I leave last week's thread on top until the period for appeals of that week's questions has expired. Then I put in another post on the current week's thread, which has the effect of bumping that thread up to the top of the board.
I probably could leave the current week's thread in the second position without causing any trouble for those who have been playing right along, but I like to try to put the current thread up top, so that any new players who might try to join the game don't get fooled into trying to answer last week's questions.
Now that all that is as clear as mud, here are the answers to the questions for Week 4.
16. Grace Bedell was the girl who wrote Abe Lincoln a letter suggesting that he grow a beard.
17. The Great Seal included the Latin words “Deo vindice.” I find it interesting to note that my source said the English translation is "God will judge," but all of you indicated that it means "God will vindicate." There's a subtle distinction there, which I'll leave to some Latin scholar to figure out.
18. Four more. A total of 200 demerits would have resulted in Hood’s dismissal.
19. Sgt. Thomas (Boston) Corbett of the 16th NY cavalry fired the shot that ultimately resulted in Booth’s demise.
20. Raphael Semmes. Already an admiral , Semmes was assigned to command the James River Squadron in early 1865. After the fall of Richmond, Semmes destroyed his ships to prevent their capture and organized his sailors and naval cadets into a brigade. At Danville, VA, Jefferson Davis named Semmes a general so that his rank would not be a handicap in the presence of army officers, although there is a question as to whether the appointment was ever made official. Semmes and his soldiers eventually joined Joe Johnston’s troops, and surrendered when Johnston did, several weeks later.
Robert B. Condon retains his lead in the First Division, while in the Second Division, we have Sarladaise and Sockknitter remaining in a tie for first place with two weeks left in the game.
