11- Battle of Palmito Ranch, Texas;

12- Lewis Paine= Lewis Powell;

13- Speaker- Indiana's Rep Schuyler Colfax;

14- Dix, French for Ten, a 10 dollar bank note which had the word 'Dix' prominently displayed;

15- Maryland's Franklin Buchanan. Curiously though he was friendly with President Lincoln, he anticipated Maryland's secession and prematurely tendered his resignation from the Navy. He had at the time been commanding the Washington Navy Yard. Maryland not seceding, Buchanan wished to withdraw his resignation, which was refused by Secy of the Navy Gideon Welles. Welles was faced with the dilemma of a Navy top heavy with Southerners and felt that Buchanan could no longer be trusted. This also served notice to all his captains to straighten out their priorities and that right quick. Buchanan ruefully went South and became a Confederate admiral.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 3.

11. The Confederates’ last land victory came at the Battle of Palmito Ranch.

12. The real name of the man who attacked (but failed to kill) Seward was Lewis Thornton Powell. After he left the Confederate Service and moved north, Powell chose to use the name Paine when he signed a loyalty oath.

13. If anyone can be said to have held the post of Speaker of the House, it was Schuyler (Smiler) Colfax, who became Speaker in 1863 and held that post in every succeeding Congress until nominated as Grant’s Vice-Presidential running mate in 1868. Note that Colfax was not a target of Booth’s multi-assassination plan, since the Constitution at that time did not place the Speaker of the House in line of succession for the Presidency.

14. The denomination was ten dollars. In a nod to New Orleans’ French heritage, the banks put the French word for ten, “dix,” in the corner of each note. As trade through the port of New Orleans resulted in such notes being spread up and down the Mississippi River basin, it became common knowledge that these “dixies” came from way down South.

15. The man who became first superintendent of the Naval Academy in 1845 was Cmdr. Franklin Buchanan, who went on to command the CSS Virginia and, later on, the Confederate naval forces at the Battle of Mobile Bay.
