11- St Paul's Episcopal Church;

12- Secy of State William Seward & Secy of Navy Gideon Welles;

13- Hospital Rat- a shirker, someone who faked illness to avoid duty;

14- Ella Bishop of Lexington KY- "Camp named Ella Bishop in honor of a young lady of that name in Lexington who nobly waved and defended stars and stripes in city while rebels were present, defying rebel power" -Diary of David Humphrey Blair, Pvt 45th Ohio Vol Inf;

15- Alfred Woolson enlisted at 17 into Co C, 1st Minnesota Heavy Artllery Regiment, 10 October, 1864. Interestingly he was born in New York the same day as Thomas Alva Edison. Mr Woolson was the sole surviving member of the Grand Army of the Republic. His commander at war's end, Col Wm J Colville, had been the commander of the 1st Minnesota Infantry, decimated at Gettysburg 2 July '63, (greatest regimental loss in an action by any CW regiment) but blocked the Confederates from a hold on Cemetery Ridge, materially aiding the Union Victory. Woolson's father had enlisted with Lincoln's first call and wounded at Shiloh, to die in Minnesota of his wounds.

A wonderful obituary from the New York Times contains these and many more tidbits: http://library.morrisville.edu/local...t/woolson.html

Welcome to our newest player, Tarheel.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 3.

11. St. Paul’s Episcopal was (and is) known as the "Church of the Confederacy." Pews designated for the use of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee can still be seen there.

12. Sec. of State William Seward and Sec. of the Navy Gideon Welles served in their positions for the entire eight years.

13. A “hospital rat” was a person who faked an illness.

14. Bishop rescued a Union flag that Confederate troops were dragging through the streets, by wrapping it around herself and declaring she would surrender it only with her life. (The Confederates left her alone.)

15. According to my source, and apparently, the sources of most of our players, Woolson was 17 at the time of his enlistment. He was born February 11, 1847 and enlisted October 10, 1864. He died on August 2, 1956.

RivrRat said Woolson enlisted in 1863, but said that his age was 17. Since I was asking for the age, I have counted his answer as correct.

Sockknitter said his age was 16 2/3, which would be correct if he enlisted in 1863. If either of you can cite a source stating that Woolson enlisted in 1863, I'll give Sockknitter credit for her answer.

The scores at the end of Week 3:

FIRST DIVISION

Bill_Torrens 18
CindyScoops 18
RaggedRebel 18
SamGrant 18

SECOND DIVISION

RivrRat 18
Robert B. Condon 18
Sarladaise 18
Sockknitter 16

NBForrest 10
