Welcome to NBForrest, who joins our list of players for Game # 35.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. Nevada was the other state admitted to the Union between Fort Sumter and Appomattox. Kansas was admitted in January 1861, prior to the date of the action at Fort Sumter.

2. Johnson was a tailor. It is reported that, when he was informed that he, a former tailor, had been nominated on the same ticket with Lincoln, a former railsplitter, Johnson quipped, “What will the aristocrats do?”

3. Emory Upton received the promotion for his action at Spotsylvania.

4. George (Maryland) Steuart, evidently overcome with chagrin at his capture, refused to shake hands. After Steuart told Hancock, “Under the circumstances, I decline to take your hand,” Hancock responded, “Under any other circumstances, I should not have offered it.”

5. Jefferson Davis (the Union general, not the Confederate president) shot and killed William Nelson over an “affair of honor.”
