__________________ My dear mother:- I have come safely through two more terrible engagements with the enemy, that at South Mountain and the great battle of yesterday (Antietam). Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles. Seven of our officers were shot and three killed in yesterday's battle and nearly 150 men killed and wounded. All from less than 300 engaged. The men have stood like iron....Maj. 6) Thomas Buchanan Read
7) There was no blood relationship. The senior D.D. Porter "adopted" young Farragut to make him a midshipman (as was customary in that era) after Farragut and his natural father saved the life of the elder's Porter's father from a boating accident. The only familial relationship that can be construed from that would be "adoped brother".
8) Alexander "Sandie" Pendleton
9) 2 companies of cavalry (source available if needed.)

7. When I wrote this question, I was thinking of David Dixon Porter, the Civil War naval commander. However, as RaggedRebel pointed out, the Civil War naval commander’s father was also named D. D. Porter. Therefore, the younger Porter was Farragut’s foster brother (or adopted brother, or stepbrother), while the elder Porter was his guardian. However, neither of them was Farragut’s son.
8. Lt. Col. Alexander S. (Sandie) Pendleton served as chief of staff for Jackson, Ewell, and Early.
9. In the army, a squadron was a unit of two or more companies of cavalry. I looked up “Troop” in the dictionary and found that it is defined as a unit of cavalry comparable in size to a company of infantry, so I also accepted the answer that a squadron was a unit of two or more troops of cavalry. I did not feel I could accept the answers that simply stated it was a unit of cavalry, since a single company could be considered a unit.
10. The persuasive chap upon whom Crook called was Col. Rutherford B. Hayes, who would eventually become the 19th President of the United States.
