Default Trivia Game # 32 - Week 1

Time once again to begin a new game. New players are welcome to join the game at any time, but the first week of any new game is always an opportune time to join.

Here are the questions for Week 1 of Game #32.

1. The younger brother of what former Georgia governor was killed at the Sunken Road during the Battle of Fredericksburg?

2. Who was the youngest man to be commissioned a Confederate general?

3.A fleet of seven ironclad gunboats was built to participate in the Union campaign against Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. What civilian constructed these gunboats?

4. To what use were the two 11-inch guns of the USS Keokuk put after she was sunk in April 1863?

5. (Two-point question) Robert Cobb Kennedy was convicted for participating in a Confederate plot to set New York City hotels afire in November 1864. What former West Point classmate of Kennedy’s served as his defense attorney at his trial?

Those of you who have not yet posted answers to the questions for Week 6 of Game # 31 may still do so until 6 PM Saturday, June 25.

Answers to the questions for Week 1 of Game # 32 will be due by 6 PM Saturday, July 2.

Good luck!

Here are the questions for Week 1 of Game #32.

1. The younger brother of what former Georgia governor was killed at the Sunken Road during the Battle of Fredericksburg?

Thomas RR Cobb, brother of Howell Cobb. It's rumoured that he was shot by a confederate private

2. Who was the youngest man to be commissioned a Confederate general?

William Paul Roberts of North Carolina...age 23.
I like the youngest Union general Galusha Pennypacker...age 20

3.A fleet of seven ironclad gunboats was built to participate in the Union campaign against Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. What civilian constructed these gunboats?

Designed by Samuel Pook (Pook's turtles), these ironclads were built by James Eads

4. To what use were the two 11-inch guns of the USS Keokuk put after she was sunk in April 1863?

They were salvaged by the confederates in May and added to the defenses of Charleston

5. (Two-point question) Robert Cobb Kennedy was convicted for participating in a Confederate plot to set New York City hotels afire in November 1864. What former West Point classmate of Kennedy’s served as his defense attorney at his trial?

Good question and I'm not sure; but I believe it was Roger Pryor. Kennedy's attempted bombing of the Barnum Museum was too much. He went to the gallows on March 25th, 1865. He sang a little song. I do not think Pryor actually graduated from West Point though; but he was a trained lawyer. So I'm making an educated guess here. INCORRECT

1 *Thomas Cobb INCORRECT
2*John Bell hood INCORRECT
3*James Buchanan Eads
4* One was mounted at Fort Sumter for a while where it stayed until August and was at one point the only serviceable cannon in the fort. It was then moved to Battery Ramsey at the eastern end of White Point Gardens in the City. It was either destroyed somehow or sold as scrap after the evacuation of Charleston. The other Dahlgren was mounted at Battery Bee on Sullivan’s Island and was used to guard the harbor until the evacuation. It was then abandoned by the Confederates and of no concern to the Yankees until one day the cannon and its carriage overturned and was buried by the sand near the beach. In 1898 it was found by troops stationed at Fort Moultrie and a year later it was mounted on The Battery where it can be seen at the corner of East Bay and South Battery.

Welcome to our newest player, Cpl. Lewis. Corporal, thanks for your very thorough research of the history of the Keokuk's guns.

Sorry for being late with the scoring this week. Sometimes I have trouble with the moderator function and last night was one of those times.

Because I'm late posting the correct answers and because Monday's a holiday, anyway, the deadline for submitting appeals will be extended until 6 PM EDT Tuesday this week.

Here are the correct answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. Howell Cobb was the former Georgia governor whose younger brother was killed defending the Sunken Road at Fredericksburg. Thomas Cobb was the one who was killed, but the question asked for the name of the governor, so an answer would have to mention Howell Cobb to be ruled correct.

2. William Roberts was commissioned a general at age 23, the youngest ever to be commissioned a Confederate general. (He was neither as young nor the possessor of as exotic a name as the youngest Union general, Galusha Pennypacker.)

3. James B. Eads constructed the St. Louis, Carondelet, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Mound City, Cincinnati, and Cairo. Eads’ vessels were developed from plans originally drawn up by Samuel Pook.

4. After the Keokuk was sunk off Charleston, the Confederates salvaged the Keokuk’s guns and used them to bolster the firepower of their shore defenses, mounting one at Fort Sumter and the other on Sullivan’s Island.

5. Kennedy’s defense attorney was Edwin Stoughton, his fellow member of the West Point class of 1859. Stoughton, the hapless one-time Union general who suffered the ignominy of being captured in bed by Mosby at Fairfax Court House in 1863, fared little better as a defense attorney, as his client was convicted and executed in March 1865, becoming the last Confederate to be executed by order of a Union court during the Civil War.

Aggie80 and CindyScoops have both indicated that, due to vacations and other family commitments, they will not be participating in Game #32. Rather than have RaggedRebel win the First Division by default, I'll abandon the split division scoring for this game and just post a single set of scores.

Scores at the end of Week 1:

Calicoboy 4
RaggedRebel 4
Texaswildcat 4
RivrRat 3
Idlewild 2
Cpl. Lewis 2
