6. Col. Elmer Ellsworth recruited from the Fire Departments of New York City. They wore red firemen’s shirts, gray jackets, and flowing gray trousers tucked into their boots. These colorful uniforms would make the firefighters now turned soldiers into easy targets during battles.
They further established their reputation when the Willard was struck by fire. Ellsworth ordered 100 of his men to assist and the entire regiment responded.
