Default Trivia Game # 30 - Week 1

Here are the questions for Week 1 of Game #30. We’ll continue to use the same rules as those that were posted for Game #28.

1. Of the candidates who received electoral votes in the 1860 U.S. presidential election, which one received the fewest?

2. Which battle has been dubbed the “Gettysburg of the West?”

3. The Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War was established in response to the defeat of Union forces at which battle?

4. In August 1864, Adm. Franklin Buchanan commanded Confederate naval forces at the Battle of Mobile Bay from his flagship, the CSS Tennessee. What vessel had the same Franklin Buchanan commanded in March 1862?

5. (Two point question) Whose picture appeared on the original U.S. “greenbacks” dollar bills?

Responses to the questions for Game 30, Week 1 will be due by 6 PM Saturday, April 9.

Good luck, and don’t forget to set your clocks ahead this weekend.

1- Northern Democrat Stephen A Douglas, though receiving 29% of the popular vote only took Missouri's 9 and 3 of New Jersey's electoral votes for 4% of the total;

2- I have seen referred several western battles- that of Westport 23 Oct '64, part of Price's Missouri Campaign and Glorieta Pass in New Mexico 28 March '62, Canby's repulse of Sibley's New Mexico Campaign as 'Gettysburg of the West' ;

UNACCEPTABLE
3- Battle of Ball's Bluff 21 Oct '61;

4- Buchanan had commanded the CSS Virginia (Merrimac) at the Hampton Roads attack on Union warships before suffering a wound;

5- Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury, he of the monumental ego, Salmon P Chase.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 1.

1. Though he came in second in the popular vote, Stephen Douglas received the fewest electoral votes, with 12. Lincoln got 180, John Breckinridge got 72, and John Bell got 39.

2. The Battle of Glorieta Pass, NM, in 1862 has been dubbed the “Gettysburg of the West,” since the Union victory there marked the end of the Confederates last bid to gain control of the Far West.

3. The Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War was established in response to the defeat of Union forces at the Battle of Balls Bluff, VA in 1861.

4. In March 1862, then-Captain Franklin Buchanan commanded the CSS Virginia in the famous battle against the USS Monitor.

5. The original U.S. “greenbacks” dollar bills bore the likeness of Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase. (Chase wasn't going to let George Washington steal his thunder if he could help it.)

As of this point, I can't accept ewc's answer to question #2. You indicated that two different battles were referred to as the "Gettysburg of the West," but the source you have given me mentions only one, Glorieta Pass. If you can submit a source confirming that the other battle you mentioned has also been referred to by that title, I'll give you credit for your answer. However, you must do so by Monday night, per the rules of the game.

Here are the scores after Week 1:

Aggie80 6
Cindyscoops 6
Raggedrebel 6
Sarladaise 6
ewc 5
Max 5
Traveller 5
Dawna 4
