Default Trivia Game #29 - Week 4

I'm going to be doing some traveling today, so I'll post the questions for Week 4 now. Thanks to YankeeWoman for helping me put these together.

16. What was the title of the Confederate national anthem?

17. Who commanded the Mississippi Squadron during the siege of Vicksburg?

18. Fill in the blank: The field across which VMI cadets charged to capture a Union artillery position during the Battle of New Market became known as the Field of Lost (blank).

19. Who was the first president of the school that later became Louisiana State University?

20. (Two point question) Of what Civil War general is designer Gloria Vanderbilt a great-granddaughter?

Responses to the Week 4 questions will be due by 6 PM Saturday, March 19.

Good luck!

18- Field of Lost Shoes;

Red face Trivia Game #29-Week 4

I apologise for the length of this post, and last week's embarrassment.

16. Many websites proclaim "God Save the South" as the CSA National Anthem, but there's controversy. Page 308 of The Complete Book of Confederate Trivia by Lang, says "Bonnie Blue Flag" was the unofficial national anthem, but then on the same page in response to "What was the Confederate National Anthem?" claims There Wasn't An Official National Anthem, but "Dixie" and "The Bonnie Blue Flag" were popular patriotic tunes.

Links for "God Save the South:"

Reenactors at CSA Reburial: http://www.angelfire.com/ga3/souther...s/funeral.html

History News Network (among others) votes for "Dixie": http://hnn.us/articles/1676.html

But Ken Burns says:
While the Confederate States of America did not have an official "national anthem" (even the North did not recognize the "Star Spangled Banner" as the nation’s anthem until 1931), "Dixie’s Land" (or" Dixie", as it is more commonly known) was truly a "national song". http://www.pbs.org/civilwar/classroom/lesson_music.html

More: "The song The Bonnie Blue Flag was considered the Confederate National Anthem. The song God Save the South was considered to be the National Hymn of the Confederacy. And of course Dixie is a spirited popular song of the South."

17. David Dixon Porter

18. Shoes

19. I believe the answer you're looking for is: William Tecumseh Sherman.
http://www.answers.com/topic/louisiana-state-university
http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/enc...University.htm http://www.lsu.edu/about_ht.htm

Sherman was the first "superintendent." But in 1877 title of superintendent was changed to "president."

David F. Boyd was superintendent during renaming title to president, and before final University name change. http://www.lsu.edu/about_ht.htm

Answers for Week 4 questions:

16. The answer I expected was "God Save the South," but in view of the many sources that you all have quoted here, I must conclude that there is no one correct answer to this question. Everybody who responded will get credit. (For those who are interested, I'll put my explanation of why I thought "God Save the South" was the correct answer down at the bottom of this post.)

17. The commander of the Mississippi Squadron was Adm. David Dixon Porter.

18. The field across which the VMI cadets charged became known as the Field of Lost Shoes, because it was so muddy when they made their charge that some of the cadets' shoes stuck in the mud and were pulled right off their feet as they ran.

19. William T. Sherman was the first president (superintendent) of the school that later became Louisiana State University.

20. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick was Gloria Vanderbilt's great-grandfather.

We still have four players with perfect scores for the game thus far. Scores at the end of Week 4:

Aggie80 24
Bill_torrens 24
Cindyscoops 24
ewc 24
Sarladaise 18
Dawna 17
Traveller 14
Dbardes87 12
Raggedrebel 12
Texaswildcat 12
Darrin365 6

When I visited Stonewall Jackson's house/headquarters in Winchester, VA some years back, there was a piano in the house, on which rested a copy of the sheet music for "God Save the South." The cover of the sheet music stated that it was "Our Confederate National Anthem." I had assumed, ever since, that it really was. However, I haven't been able to find any source that says the Confederate Congress ever officially adopted it, or any other song, as the CSA national anthem. Evidently the label on the cover of the sheet music represented an effort by the publisher to boost sales.
